This could lead to cascading effects on aquatic ecosystems, including disruptions to water temperature regulation and the habitats of aquatic species. Additionally, the loss of ice cover could impact northern communities that depend on stable winter ice for transportation and recreation. Currently, 23% of the studied lakes have already crossed critical temperature thresholds, a figure that could rise to 70% by 2100 under high-emission scenarios.
